They started out doing something else — for years, in places and situations that few people have access to, developing an understanding of their subject that no amount of research from the outside could replicate.
At some point, the weight of what they knew became a book.
If your peers come to you when they want to understand something properly — not the official version, not the simplified version, but the version that holds up — then the audience for what you know is almost certainly larger than your field. It just doesn't know you exist yet.
That's the gap we work in.
